What do you mean by "western" medicine? Medicine either works or it doesn't, no matter where in the world it's practiced. If you're under the impression that China does not employ modern science-based medicine, you are demonstrably wrong.

western medicines down fall is that it is not practiced as it what created, now its all prescription based and mixing drugs that have never been clinically tested to mix, most patients i see are on 5 or six meds, those meds arent tested being mixed and patients are guinea pigs
tcm shines in many ways but also has its faults, same as western medicine.

A story just to confirm your well written and accurate article. My mother found a lump under her auxilla. She did see a TCM pracitioner and was told that it was not cancerous when in fact it was. My mother would not be alive today if she did not pursue western medicine.

Hi,
I am an MD, with many years of experience as an oncologist. I am a Canadian born Chinese. I believe that your ignorance towards chinese medicine is pathetic at its worst. Let me tell you something, as a doctor, I have done many research in both western drugs and traditional medicine whether it is TCM or ayurvedic. One thing I can tell you is that TCM does have it's merits, and it's proven to be effective when it comes to many illnesses. Honestly, I must say, you should be ashamed of yourself for posting this article. Do us a favor and don't call yourself Chinese. I am born and raised in a western environment, but yet, I am proud to be a chinese descent. If you want to discuss this further, I am happy to do so, but remember, I have evidences from research to back up my claim. Nevertheless, next time if you want to antagonize traditional medicine, do some research to back up your claim, instead of posting this kind of rubbish.

Yeah yeah it's great to make snarky comments on a skeptic blog but I'm glad that the author finally made the point I wanted to make at the very end. Modern drug discovery is by no means a set procedure, and it would be foolish to ignore thousands of years of experience in medicine (albeit qualitative). The faulty ideology behind TCM is irrelevant and with the pipeline of successful drug candidate slowing to a trickle, researchers are rightly looking to traditional medicine ingredients for some answers.

hey thanks for clarifying it, I always knew the entire Chinese culture was bogus and build on stupidity. dude you must be ashamed of being Chinese, I know I would be embarrassed to admit Asian affiliations... thanks for clarifying the superiority of western medicine and science, and culture. I hope when nothing in western medicine works for your future ailments you don't get all superstitious and go back to that monkey medicine...

I feel my education was very thorough. I studied TCM to help people and that is what I am doing. Research has its place, but any practitioner knows that TCM works based on experience. All research will do is open TCM up to skeptics and move TCM into more mainstream areas such as hospitals. Research won't make it "work more".
